What I knew
Bringing principles of holistic, cross-platform design experience from my previous 5 years at a Fortune 500 company was key to joining Mountain America Credit Union at a time of massive company growth. I believe every company benefits from consistency, aligning product design with branding guidelines, and maintaining a system for these standards. It creates answers for users, designers, developers, and managers. This efficiency allows for Increased user attention and employee retention.
-
What insight I gained
Identifying growing pains that come from implementing systems was an Invaluable experience I had at this credit union. I learned to have patience with others because some do not visualize a big picture so easily.
User research in many small doses is helpful In keeping your designs aligned with a users needs and goals.
-
What I implemented
Staying within scope and creating a design system at the same time is possible, requiring frequent collaboration & documentation.
User research allows the product team to know if their efforts are heading In the right direction. Present research data with a report.
Always prepare ideas visually before a meeting, this will allow team members to quickly comprehend what you are presenting and have the opportunity to critique from their point of view. Preparing mockups allow team members to manipulate the Idea/feature together, solving user pain points with multiple perspectives at play. -
My strengths
I learned my strengths when designing product are developing intuitive architecture of the product content and building a consistent design system for users and product to familiarize themselves with the content. I validate my work through usability testing. Every design decision has an explainable reason. I need design critiques because I want to improve digital experiences and this cannot be done alone. There are things I don’t see and I rely on other people to identify what I may have missed contributing to my passion for diversity, collaboration and transparent communication.

Challenges before joining the team
No design system
No design consistency
User testing on large designs only
Design mockups shared only during a sprint every two weeks
Developers were just “winging it” (little collaboration)
Lot’s of discussion, little production
-
Successes after joining the team
Product delivered on time
Product met it’s goal
User metrics improved
Everyone received their bonus

Adhere to the system
Mockups in smaller doses
Usability testing on smaller designs
Manipulate mockups daily (b/c

consistency for users + quick processing
faster designs
